God's Glitter

Shortly after returning from visiting family for Christmas, my wife, daughter and I were walking the trail system in Lewistown. We had gotten a couple inches of snow recently, so there was snow on the trails and the surrounding landscape. When there is snow on the trails after a couple of days, I will sometimes complain that no one has plowed them. I’ll make remarks about the need get that snow off the trails because it will turn to ice, thereby endangering future trail users.

Well, that day, as we were walking, the rays of sun began to hit the snow just right, and my wife said something like, “It’s like God just sprinkled glitter from heaven.” That statement struck me. I have a tendency to go negative and think about what wrong with the snow on the trails. It’s like the Holy Spirit said, “Have you seen My glitter?” Even in the nuisances and inconveniences of life (like snow and ice on a walking trail), we have a chance to see God’s glitter.

To be sure, there are a lot of things wrong with our society. We live in a society that manufactures negativity like a World War II ammunition factory trying to keep up with the battlefield demands around the world. But, while there are negativity and problems everywhere, we need to look for God’s glitter in life. The Bible is replete with people who looked for God's glitter.

Paul found God’s glitter in suffering. He wrote, “For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison.” (2 Cor. 4:17)

He saw God’s glitter in death. “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” (Phil 1:21)

Jesus saw God’s glitter in His crucifixion. Hebrews tells us, “…who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Heb 12:2)

The three Hebrew slaves saw God’s glitter when they said, “If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire; and He will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”(Daniel 3:17-18)

God’s glitter is all around us. It is available for us to see every day. Look closely and you’ll find His glitter. When you find it, let it encourage you today.
